Eisenbud Lectures to feature Jonathan Heckman

The speaker for the 2024 Eisenbud Lectures in Mathematics and Physics will feature Jonathan Heckman of the University of Pennsylvania. The lectures will take place at Brandeis University from April 9^th – April 10^th.

The Eisenbud Lectures are offered each year and are the result of a generous donation from Leonard and Ruth-Jean Eisenbud. Each year, a set of lectures are presented by an eminent physicist or mathematician who works close to the interface of the Math and Physics.

Professor Heckman’s work involves a blend of techniques from physics and math centered on string theory and quantum field theory, which he uses to address questions in particle physics, cosmology, and quantum gravity, as well as topics in algebraic geometry, algebraic topology and information theory.

●       Tuesday April 9, 11:30 am “Geometric Approach to Quantum Fields” (Gerstenzang 123). Light lunch follows the talk.

●       Tuesday, April 9, 4pm “Top Down Approach to Global Categorical Symmetries” (Abelson 333). Refreshments follow the talk.

●       Wednesday, April 10, 4pm “Topological Approach to Symmetries in Quantum Gravity” (Abelson 333). Refreshments follow the talk.

2019 SACNAS Regional Meeting to be held at Brandeis

Brandeis University will be hosting the 2019 New England SACNAS Regional Meeting on Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 9am-5pm.

SACNAS is an inclusive organization dedicated to fostering the success of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans, from college students to professionals, in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership in STEM. Dr. Tepring Piquado, a Policy Researcher at RAND Corporation and Brandeis alum and Dr. Marcelle Soares-Santos, the Landsman Assistant Professor at Brandeis, will be keynote speakers. More information about the speakers and the Career and Professional development workshops and panel discussions are available as well.

This meeting is FREE, but all attendees must register by February 22, 2019.

 

Science Posse Scholars Present Posters July 9 at SSC Atrium

On July 9th, incoming Science Posse Scholars will be presenting posters on various research topics including pheromones, computational models of galaxies, and software engineering.  The event will take place in the Shapiro Science Center atrium from 1:30 to 3:00 PM. The 10 scholars are interested in pursuing STEM degrees and will all start here at Brandeis in the fall.

Everyone is encouraged to attend.

2nd Boston Symposium of Encoded Library Platforms was held Aug. 4

The Brandeis Chemistry Department, together with GlaxoSmithKline and Pharmaron, is hosting the 2nd Boston Symposium of Encoded Library Platforms on August 4th in the Shapiro Theater. This symposium will feature 8 speakers from industry and academic labs, covering the newest developments in the technology of encoded small molecule libraries and related topics.

For several decades, major efforts have gone into discovering drug leads by high-throughput screening, in which “libraries” of thousands to millions of random compounds are tested in a highly repetitive fashion for biological activity, such as the ability to inhibit an enzyme. A new and elegant alternative to this process is the use of encoded libraries, in which each random molecule within the library bears a “tag” of DNA with a unique sequence. Libraries containing hundreds of millions of DNA-tagged compounds can be incubated with a target protein in a single tube, and those which bind to the target can be identified by high-throughput sequencing of the DNA barcodes in the protein-bound fraction. This approach has gained great popularity in the last few years, and is just this week the cover story of Chemical & Engineering News.

MassBio Info Session Rescheduled to February 24 at 3:30 PM

MassBio was cancelled on Feb. 8th due to the snowstorm. It has been rescheduled to Feb. 24th.

MassBio represents over 670 companies, both biotech/pharma and life science service providers, and its goal is to advance the life science industry by providing great resources to its members and by being an advocate for the industry. (EL)2 2011. the Experiential Learning, Engaged Learners Symposium held each Spring at Brandeis, will take place on the afternoon of Thursday, March 24th, in the Levin Ballroom and International Lounge. Brandeis President Frederick M. Lawrence will be the keynote speaker. Student presenters include undergraduates from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Physics, Psychology, as well as a wide range of other disciplines across the university, will present results from research, internships, and other learning experiences.

13th Annual Northeast Student Chemistry Research Conference (NSCRC)

The Northeast Student Chemistry Research Conference (NSCRC) is organized for students by students. It is devoted to the research of undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral chemistry students, providing a relaxed atmosphere for students to share their work. The day-long event features student poster and oral research presentations, a keynote speaker, awards, and catered lunch. The conference encourages students to network and get feedback from their peers. The 1st NSCRC was held April 24, 1999 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Neuroscience Movie Night

News for Neuroscience and Biology undergrads from the Neuroscience UDRs:

The first Neuroscience Movie Night will be Thursday, Feb 12th from 6-9pm in Volen 105!  We will be showing the movie Memento, a psychological thriller about a man with short-term memory loss.  The film will be followed by a discussion led by Professor John Lisman, Neuroscience Program Chair on recent findings on short-term memory. There will be FREE PIZZA as well!
